Ella Villinger is a German photographer of Kazakh ethnicity based between Almaty, Kazakhstan, and Munich, Germany. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in photography at Hochschule Bielefeld (HSBI).

Her practice lies in the intersections of documentary photography, portraiture, and artistic research. Working across Central Asia and Europe, she develops long term, research driven, projects examining cultural memory, identity formation, intergenerational narratives, and the relationship between personal history and geopolitical transformation.

Grounded in both lived experience and critical inquiry, her work navigates questions of belonging, displacement, and continuity.  Her methodology combines sustained field engagement, observational photography, and contextual research, allowing projects to unfold over extended periods, embracing complexity over fixed conclusions.

In 2024, she received the Best-of-Prize in Photography from the University of Europe for Applied Sciences for her project Kazakh Nomads & Their Unique Companions, in recognition of her nuanced and socially engaged approach to documentary making.

Ella approaches photography as both visual practice and investigative tool, as a medium through which memory and identity are examined as constructions and negotiations across time and geography.
